Google AI and Infrastructure

Our mission is to empower customers with breakthrough capabilities and insights by delivering AI and infrastructure at unparalleled scale, efficiency, reliability, and velocity.

About us

Google’s infrastructure is among the largest and most technically sophisticated in the world—a unique, planetary-scale distributed operating system capable of orchestrating the massive data and complex reasoning that AI demands. By co-evolving models, custom silicon, networks, and software in tandem, we can deliver the extreme scale and deterministic efficiency required to solve the world’s most complex scientific and commercial challenges.

Powering the frontier

Our specialized hardware, efficient data centers, and co-designed software infrastructure provide the raw computing power and efficiency required to train and run Google DeepMind frontier AI models. We partner with Google DeepMind across every layer of the technology stack—including future workload prediction, TPU co-design, custom silicon and network topologies, and full-stack vertical integration—to take on the most demanding AI workloads and adapt to evolving model architectures at scale.

Delighting users

Our infrastructure is the foundation that enables AI-powered breakthroughs across Google’s iconic products, including Gemini, Search, YouTube, and Android. We accelerate the delivery of helpful, multibillion-user experiences that are only possible because of the unique way we've built the machine and the model together.

Empowering customers

We bring the power of Google’s fully integrated AI stack to customers through Google Cloud. That’s why Google was recently named a leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for AI Infrastructure and 90% of top AI labs and the world's most innovative enterprises choose Google Cloud.

“At the unique intersection of both AI and infrastructure, we give the world the power to do the impossible by building technology at a scale and speed most people can’t even imagine.”

Our journey

Google’s infrastructure reflects a decades-long commitment to structural innovation that transformed how the world thinks about networking and scale.

The search for infinite scale

In the early 2000s, Google pioneered hyperscale computing to index the entire web in milliseconds. We reimagined how computers coordinated and scaled to take on the most complex workloads in the world. The creation of the Google File System (GFS) and MapReduce shifted the foundational unit of computing from a single server to an entire data center. And the ‘data center as a computer’ concept became the direct ancestor of modern AI infrastructure, requiring massive compute resources that allowed Search to evolve from simple keyword matching into deep semantic understanding.

The invention of the TPU

Google's early neural network research significantly improved speech recognition and computer vision, but in 2013, the highest-quality models were too expensive to run on standard CPUs and GPUs. To solve this cost and compute bottleneck, Google designed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). TPUs provided the hardware efficiency required to scale complex architectures and underpinned the Transformer architecture—now the global industry standard for nearly every large-scale language and multimodal model. Today, TPUs serve as the underlying foundation for training and serving Google's most advanced AI models (like Gemini) to billions of users with industry-leading speed and efficiency.

The creation of Borg

Google Borg revolutionized distributed computing by abstracting thousands of disparate machines into a single unified computing cluster, pioneering container-based workload orchestration a decade before containerization became an industry standard. By treating the entire data center as a single warehouse-scale computer, Borg eliminated the need for developers to manage physical hardware and achieved unprecedented resource utilization, fault tolerance, and scalability. Borg is considered an architectural and conceptual predecessor to open-source Kubernetes.
